The Roam X uses a superfast 4G router to create a WiFi hotspot in your vehicle. The 5G ready antenna significantly improves the reception of the signal and is omnidirectional, so it will perform wherever you are and without adjustment. Simply fit and forget. The Roam X kit will also connect to existing WiFi connections (such as your home) and repeat the signal. Do I need a SIM card? The short answer is yes. There are many different types of SIM cards to choose from and how you choose them should depend on what type of user you are. You will be streaming a lot of Netflix or BBC iPlayer? Then you will need a lot of data. If you are watching 1 hour of videos a day, you will need around 40GB of data a month. Double this if you are watching in HD. You will just be listening to some music, browsing restaurants and checking your emails? This is much less intensive at around 10GB per month. You can use a data calculator like this one from Tesco to estimate your data usage. The other thing to consider is whether you need a single network SIM or multi-network SIM and how important having a connection all of the time is to you. If you are generally in the same place then you can check what’s called a coverage checker, like this one from EE to see the coverage of EE in your specific location, you can do the same for O2, Three and Vodafone. Alternatively, if you are travelling around a lot and it’s essential you stay connected, you can have a multi-network SIM card, like our partners BroadbandGo. This picks up the best network in the location you are in. Since April 2022 both the Roam and Roam X products are being sent out with a 5GB free multi-network SIM card from our partner BroadbandGo. You will need to register this using their app to activate it. With app control Our specially designed app can be used to easily monitor the usage or change settings on the router, wherever you are in the vehicle. This eliminates the need to go inside your cupboard to check a screen or LEDs on the router. Who is it For? The Roam X WiFi system is also very popular with owners of campervans, van conversions, canal boats, trucks and horseboxes Will I be able to watch Netflix, BBC iPlayer or Amazon Prime? Yes you absolutely can! The Roam X kit will keep you connected to all your favourite shows in rural and remote areas, as long as you have a subscription or license for the relevant service. You will need about 2 – 3Mbps for standard definition streaming and about 3 – 5 Mbps for HD streaming which are achieved almost everywhere in the UK with the Roam X. Music streaming services like Spotify need a maximum of 1Mbps. How do I Install it? We would always recommend a professional installation, click the button below to put in your postcode or location and find installers closest to you. If you are buying a new caravan or a second hand caravan you can mention to your dealer that you would like a Maxview Roam X WiFi kit installed and they may be able to do it for you. If they are not sure what it is then please ask them to contact us and we can advise them. Yes, extension cables can be purchased separately to allow a flexible mounting position to the router. They are available in 1m, 2m, 3m and 5m lengths. Click here to see extension cables. What are the differences between the Roam and the Roam X? The main difference is the speed capability of the router. The Roam X is a CAT6 router which means maximum speeds are 300 megabytes per second compared to 150 megabytes per second on the CAT4 Roam. The other difference is the capability to handle multiple heavy user simultaneously. What if I already have a Roam Antenna Installed on my Roof? What are the Main Technical Details I Need to Know? The Roam X router provides super high performance The antenna is compatible with all 5G frequency bands to ensure out customers are future-proofed when the 5G coverage becomes more widely available. The router provides 2 SIM slots 4 ethernet ports allowing additional wired devices CAT 6 LTE chip with download speeds of up to 300mbps MU-MIMO technology, for high speeds across multiple devices 2.4GHz WiFi and 5GHz WiFi meaning you can choose between 2 networks in your WiFi settings. 5GHz means faster speeds but lower range and 2.4GHz means lower speeds but longer range and better object penetration, such as walls. Will it Work in Europe? Yes, it will work in Europe. The Roam works across the UK and Europe but this is dependent on data provider and contract. Due to Brexit there are some restrictions on how much data you can use with your UK sim card in Europe, we go into more detail about this in our SIM card article. The Roam antenna is 5G ready and compatible with all 5G frequency bands as standard so it’s ready when this new technology arrives. The router itself uses 3G and 4G. At the moment, the speeds which can be obained using our 3G/4G router and our antenna are sufficient for all every day uses of the internet, from checking emails to streaming Netflix or BBC iPlayer in HD. 5G is largely intended for futuristic technologies such as self-driving cars. Yes, absolutely. You will be able to connect to the WiFi connection with your smart devices in the same way you connect them to your router at home. It’s worth bearing in mind that the router will need to be continually powered for the WiFi connection to remain on, so if you are checking WiFi CCTV cameras then the router will need to be on also when you are not there. This may come down to what battery you have installed.
